Bratislava Old Town Hotels: Is the Old Town the Best Area to Stay?

For a first visit, the Old Town (Staré Mesto) is the most convenient base: Michael's Gate, the Main Square, St Martin's Cathedral and the castle are all within it. The trade-off is cost, since the city's accommodation tax per person per night is higher in Staré Mesto than in other districts. This guide explains the area, not individual hotels.

Checked in against the City of Bratislava, IDS BK, Twin City Liner, FlixBus and Slovak Lines. Timetables and rules change: confirm with the operator before you travel.

Why stay in Bratislava Old Town?

Because the sights most visitors come for are there: Michael's Gate, the Main Square and Old Town Hall, St Martin's Cathedral and, on the hill above, Bratislava Castle.

Staying inside the Old Town lets you see them on foot and go back to your room between visits. Check opening days: the Old Town Hall closes on Mondays, and Michael's Gate and the castle museum on Tuesdays.

Is accommodation tax higher in the Old Town?

Yes. The City of Bratislava charges its accommodation tax per person per night, and the rate for Staré Mesto is higher than for the other districts.

The rates come from city ordinance VZN 4/2023 and have applied since 1 July 2023. The accommodation provider collects the tax, so check whether the price you see already includes it.

How do I reach an Old Town hotel on arrival?

It depends on how you arrive. The Twin City Liner from Vienna docks at the HUMA 6 pier on the Old Town riverside, and some buses stop at Most SNP, by the bridge at the edge of the Old Town.

From Bratislava hlavná stanica, tram 1 runs towards Centrum. From Bratislava Airport, bus 61 goes to the main station, and night bus N61 runs via Nivy and the centre.

If you arrive on the REX6 at Bratislava-Petržalka, you are south of the Danube and will need a bus or taxi across the river.

Who should stay outside the Old Town?

Travellers with an early or late train to Vienna may prefer the area near the main station, where the REX8 departs. Anyone watching the budget can compare districts with the lower tax rate.

Outside the Old Town, plan your rides with the IDS BK app; TAPni sa lets you pay by tapping a contactless card on board. The Bratislava CARD with transport covers unlimited travel in all IDS BK zones.

Why does this guide not list specific hotels?

Because rating hotels honestly needs first-hand stays, which this guide does not claim. It gives you the verified facts that decide the area instead.

When you compare properties, check the exact address against the sights you plan to see, whether the price includes the city tax, and the cancellation conditions.
