Bratislava Main Station Hotels: Is Staying Near Hlavná Stanica a Good Idea?
Staying near Bratislava hlavná stanica makes sense if you have an early or late train: the REX8 to Vienna leaves from here, tram 1 runs to the centre and bus 61 goes to the airport. For sightseeing on foot, the Old Town is more convenient. This guide explains the area, not individual hotels.
Checked in against ÖBB, VOR, IDS BK, Slovak Lines, the City of Bratislava and the Bratislava CARD site. Timetables and rules change: confirm with the operator before you travel.
| To | How | Good to know |
|---|---|---|
| Vienna (Wien Hauptbahnhof) | REX8 via Marchegg, about 56 minutes | Last departure 23:50; from 13 December 2026, hourly until midnight |
| Old Town and centre | Tram 1 (Hlavná stanica – Centrum – Nám. Ľ. Štúra) | Pay with TAPni sa or a ticket from the station machine |
| Bratislava Airport | City bus 61 by day, night bus N61 | Both are DPB lines, so TAPni sa works |

Who should stay near Bratislava main station?
Travellers catching an early or late REX8 to Vienna, those heading to the airport, and anyone using regional trains towards Pezinok and the Small Carpathian wine towns.
The REX8 leaves hlavná stanica at 50 minutes past the hour, with the last departure at 23:50. From 13 December 2026, VOR says it runs hourly between 5:00 and midnight, including a new 21:50 train.
How do I get from the main station to the Old Town?
Take tram 1, which IDS BK lists running from Hlavná stanica via Centrum to Námestie Ľudovíta Štúra. Pay by tapping a contactless card with TAPni sa or with a ticket from the station machine.
IDS BK lists a red multifunctional ticket machine in the station vestibule, which accepts coins, notes and bank cards. City bus and tram drivers do not sell tickets.
How do I get from the main station to the airports?
To Bratislava Airport, take city bus 61, or night bus N61 at night. To Vienna Airport, Slovak Lines runs buses that stop at the main railway station.
Slovak Lines gives platform H as its stop at the main railway station. Check its timetable for the route, because some services run via the Nivy bus station instead.
Does the city tax depend on where near the station I stay?
It can. The City of Bratislava charges a higher accommodation tax per person per night in Staré Mesto than in other districts, so the exact address of the property matters.
The rates come from ordinance VZN 4/2023 and have applied since 1 July 2023. Check whether the price you are shown already includes the tax.
What can I do at the station before a trip?
Buy IDS BK tickets at the machine in the vestibule, and collect a Bratislava CARD at the ZSSK customer centre, which accepts printed vouchers only.
This guide could not confirm a left-luggage office at the station from an official source, so check with ZSSK before relying on one.
