Bratislava Day Trip from Vienna: Itinerary, Transport and Timings
Bratislava is an easy day trip from Vienna: the REX8 from Wien Hauptbahnhof reaches Bratislava hlavná stanica in about 56 minutes, roughly every hour. In one day you can see the Old Town, St Martin's Cathedral and Bratislava Castle, and still catch a train back close to midnight. Avoid Tuesdays if you want the castle museum.
Checked in against ÖBB, VOR, IDS BK, the Slovak National Museum, the Bratislava City Museum, Twin City Liner and Visit Bratislava. Timetables and rules change: confirm with the operator before you travel.

How do I get from Vienna to Bratislava for a day trip?
Take the REX8 from Wien Hauptbahnhof to Bratislava hlavná stanica, the most practical station for the Old Town. It takes about 56 minutes and runs roughly hourly.
The REX6 also runs hourly from Wien Hauptbahnhof but ends at Bratislava-Petržalka, south of the Danube. Buses take a similar time, and from 1 May to 2 November the Twin City Liner boat makes a scenic one-way trip in about 1 hour 15 minutes.
The ÖBB Bratislava-Ticket also works as a day ticket for Bratislava public transport on its first day. Otherwise, pay for trams and buses with TAPni sa by tapping a contactless card.
Which day of the week is best for a Bratislava day trip?
Avoid Tuesday if you want to see inside the castle: the SNM – Museum of History and Michael's Gate are both closed that day. Avoid Monday if you plan to add Devín Castle, which is closed on Mondays.
On Sundays, St Martin's Cathedral opens for visitors only from 13:30 to 16:00. Wednesday to Saturday gives you the most sites open at once.
What should I see in Bratislava in one day?
Focus on the compact Old Town and the castle above it. Michael's Gate, the Main Square and St Martin's Cathedral are close together, and the castle is a walk uphill.
Visit Bratislava describes Michael's Gate as the only preserved one of the four original town gates, with a balcony view over the castle hill and the roofs. St Martin's Cathedral was the coronation church of Hungarian kings and their consorts from 1563 to 1830.
At the castle, the museum ticket covers the interior, the Treasury and the Northern Walls, and museum visitors can climb the Crown Tower. Bratislava CARD holders enter the castle museum free.
Can I add Devín Castle to a day trip from Vienna?
Yes, if you start early. City bus 29 runs from Malá Scéna to Devín, and the castle is open Tuesday to Sunday, from 10:00 to 16:00 between November and February.
Plan extra time for the bus ride and the walk up from the stop, and leave Devín for the morning on short winter days. Last entry is always 45 minutes before closing.
Should I take the boat for a Vienna–Bratislava day trip?
Only one way, and only in season. The Twin City Liner runs from 1 May to 2 November 2026, plus Advent cruises from 27 November to 20 December, and it takes longer and costs more than the train.
One option is the boat in the morning and the train back in the evening, since the last boat leaves Bratislava at 18:30 in the main season. You need a passport or national ID card on board.
How late can I return to Vienna?
The last REX8 leaves Bratislava hlavná stanica at 23:50, and the last REX6 leaves Bratislava-Petržalka at 23:16, reaching Wien Hauptbahnhof at 0:15.
Before 13 December 2026 there is no REX8 at 21:50, so the evening gap runs from 20:50 to 22:50. From 13 December, VOR says the REX8 runs hourly until midnight, including a new 21:50.
Keep your passport or ID card at hand: Austria runs temporary checks at its border with Slovakia until 15 March 2027.
