Slovakia eSIM and SIM Cards: What Travellers Need to Stay Connected
If your mobile plan is from an EU or EEA country, you can roam like at home in Slovakia and may not need anything new. Travellers from elsewhere can buy a travel eSIM before arriving or a Slovak prepaid card, such as Telekom Easy, which needs a one-time identity check before it works.
Checked in against the European Union's Your Europe portal, Slovak mobile operators and EURAXESS Slovakia. Timetables and rules change: confirm with the operator before you travel.
| Option | Best for | How to get it | Good to know |
|---|---|---|---|
| Your EU or EEA plan | Visitors with a phone plan from the EU, Iceland, Liechtenstein or Norway | Nothing to buy; roaming works as at home | Your operator may apply a fair use limit on data |
| Slovak prepaid SIM or eSIM | Longer stays, or if you want a Slovak number | Operator shop or e-shop; Telekom sells Easy online with an eSIM option | One-time identity verification is needed to activate the card |
| Travel eSIM from an international provider | Short trips from outside the EU | Bought online before travel and installed with a QR code | Your phone must support eSIM; check data allowance and coverage when buying |
| Your non-EU plan with roaming | Very short visits when your operator offers a fair roaming deal | Turn on roaming or buy your operator's travel add-on | EU roaming rules do not protect you; check your operator's charges first |
Fares and data allowances change often, so check the current offer with each provider.
Do I need a SIM card in Slovakia if I have an EU plan?
Usually not. Under the EU's "roam like at home" rules, calls, texts and data in Slovakia are charged at your domestic rates if your plan is from an EU or EEA country.
The rules also cover Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway, and extend to Moldova and Ukraine. Your operator may apply a fair use limit on how much data you can use at the domestic price.
Other countries are not covered by these rules, although some operators offer similar terms on their own. Check with your operator before you travel.
Can tourists buy a Slovak prepaid SIM card?
Yes, but the card must be registered with your identity before it works. EURAXESS Slovakia says sellers ask for a passport or national ID card, and the minimum age to buy a SIM card is 15.
Slovak Telekom, for example, sells its Easy prepaid card online or at Telekom centres. It says a one-time identity verification is required during registration, in which you photograph your ID document and your face with your phone.
Telekom also offers Easy as an eSIM sent by email. Check during registration that the identity document you hold is accepted online; if not, a shop can help in person.
Which mobile operators are there in Slovakia?
The four networks are Slovak Telekom, Orange, O2 and 4ka. All four describe eSIM support on their own websites.
Telekom says its Easy prepaid card is used in EU+ zones under the same conditions as in Slovakia, subject to fair use. O2 says its eSIM is issued when you order a new programme in its app, or in an O2 shop.
When does a travel eSIM make sense in Slovakia?
For short visits from outside the EU, when your home operator's roaming is expensive. You buy it online before the trip and install it with a QR code, so you have data as soon as you land.
Check that your phone supports eSIM and is not locked to your home operator. Compare the data allowance, validity and the networks it uses in Slovakia before you buy.
Do I need a new SIM for a day trip from Vienna?
If your plan already works in Austria under EU roaming, it works the same way in Slovakia. If you rely on a travel eSIM or add-on for Austria, check that it also covers Slovakia.
Many day trips involve checking train times and the IDS BK app on the go, so make sure your data works on both sides of the border before you leave Vienna.
