Getting Around Bratislava by Public Transport: Tickets and How to Pay

Bratislava's trams, buses and trolleybuses belong to the IDS BK system, and the city is covered by zones 100 and 101. The quickest way to pay is TAPni sa: hold a contactless bank card or phone to the validator on board. You can also buy tickets in the IDS BK app or at machines, but not from city bus drivers.

Checked in against IDS BK (the regional transport system) and Dopravný podnik Bratislava. Timetables and rules change: confirm with the operator before you travel.

Can I pay with a bank card on Bratislava trams and buses?

Yes. With TAPni sa, run by Dopravný podnik Bratislava, you hold a contactless bank card, phone or watch to the lower part of the validator for a few seconds, and it issues a ticket.

A tap on its own buys the 30-minute basic ticket. For an hourly, 24-hour or reduced ticket, choose it on the validator before tapping.

DPB says you are never charged more in a day than the price of a one-day ticket. TAPni sa tickets are valid only on DPB lines, and every vehicle has at least one validator, marked with a green TAPni sa sticker on the doors.

How to pay with TAPni sa on Bratislava public transport

  1. Find the validator. Look for the green TAPni sa sticker on the doors; every DPB vehicle has at least one TAPni sa validator.
  2. Choose the ticket if needed. For anything other than the 30-minute basic ticket, select the ticket type on the validator first.
  3. Tap your card or phone. Hold your contactless bank card, phone or watch to the lower part of the validator for a few seconds.
  4. Wait for the confirmation. The validator confirms the purchase. Taps later the same day are capped at the price of a one-day ticket.

Which zones do I need in Bratislava?

Within the city boundaries of Bratislava you travel in zones 100 and 101, and IDS BK says you only need to choose the ticket by its time validity there.

City tickets for zones 100+101 cover trams, trolleybuses, city buses 1 to 199 and night lines, as well as listed suburban trains and regional buses within the city.

If you travel beyond the city, count every zone on the route, including those you only pass through. Ticket offices and regional bus drivers can choose the ticket for you if you tell them your destination.

Is the IDS BK app useful for visitors?

Yes. IDS BK says its app is available in English and German, sells single tickets and travelcards, and includes timetables, stop departure boards and a connection search.

A single ticket can start right after purchase or at a time you choose later the same day. The app shows how long the ticket has left before it expires.

Payment in the app is cashless, by debit or credit card or from app credit. IDS BK reminds passengers that boarding is only allowed with a valid ticket.

Where can I buy a paper ticket?

At ticket machines, ticket offices and newsagents. Ticket sales in vehicles are only possible on regional lines, so city bus and tram drivers do not sell tickets.

The red multifunctional machines accept coins, notes and bank cards and sell the full range of single and day tickets. IDS BK lists them at locations including the main railway station vestibule, the bus station and the arrivals and departures halls of Bratislava Airport.

The ordinary machines at city stops sell single tickets and 24-hour tickets for coins only.

How do I get from the train or bus station into the centre?

Both Bratislava hlavná stanica and the Nivy bus station are connected to the city network. Use the connection search in the IDS BK app for the current line, because routes change with roadworks.

If you arrive at Bratislava-Petržalka on the REX6 from Vienna, you are south of the Danube and will usually need a bus or tram to cross into the Old Town.
